When social media is bad for business | Inman News

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

This is a great article!  It puts social media in its proper perspective — as a great communication tool, rather than a leading business generator. Businesses, pay attention!

It certainly clarified my love/hate feelings (not to mention guilt) regarding the plethora of social media outlets, and my use (or lack thereof) of most of them.

Well written, well thought out – a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Social media presence tends to be touted these days as a proficiency that must be conquered in order to compete for and generate business. If that were true, it would be called “commercial” media. Rather, social media is simply our way of communicating, redefined. It is another way to interact, and the rules for social interaction are no different online than off; the venue is just different.

Come for Splash Day at Pheasant Run!

Monday, April 19th, 2010

I like supporting worthwhile causes, and this is a great one.  It benefits kids with cancer, and features an early-spring pool plunge by Pheasant Run’s property manager

Aaah, Splash Day is the perfect combination of (mild) human suffering, rewarded with humane generosity.  Stop by and drop off a few bucks this Saturday. Or just send a check — that’s what Apartment Search is doing! (Address is on the attached link).

Splash Day is Coming!

Village Green’s annual fundraiser, Splash Day, first began 19 years ago with a dare. Because we traditionally open our apartment community pools in early April, often before swimming-friendly weather, a manager accepted a dare to take the plunge, but only if pledges were made for donations to a worthy cause.

Since then, Village Green has donated up to $50,000 a year to various charities with Splash Day efforts from each of its regions. Our goal is to raise pledges for the St. Louis -based “Friends of Kids with Cancer” – http://www.friendsofkids.com/

Domestic Relocation

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

I just like the phrase, ‘Penny Wise and Pound Foolish’. Old Ben Franklin knew what he was talking about.  There are currently some fantastic deals in the St. Louis Apartment market — just be sure you know what you’re getting for your penny before you buy...

We’ve all heard the phrase ‘Penny Wise and Pound Foolish’ before and I think it has taken on a new meaning recently within the relocation industry. It seems that the focus has shifted from everyone working together to make the transferee’s move as painless as possible to everyone (including the transferee) working “solo” to find the cheapest possible price for any given service. It reminds me of another one of my favorite phrases, “You get what you pay for.”

Milwaukee Apartment Finders: A New Real Estate Concept Enters Milwaukee’s Historically Traditional Real Estate Market

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Great article explaining the many benefits of using an apartment locator service (vs. Apartments.com, Craigslist, guide books, etc.) We offer the same service in St. Louis.

Every major city has at least one locator — a real estate agency dedicated solely to assisting renters.  Look for one in your area. Locator services really do save renters time, gas and money!

This one sounds so good, I’m thinking of moving to Milwaukee…

It’s a fact that when renters are armed with more information they make better rental decisions. Milwaukee Apartment Finders service allows the renter to sit back and enjoy the process. It’s never been so easy to find the perfect rental home in Milwaukee. For renters it’s clear, Milwaukee Apartment Finders is “The Smart Way to Rent.”

Apartment Hunting in a Renters’ Market – The Juggle – WSJ

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Finding an apartment, in New York City or St. Louis or anywhere, is a major undertaking.  The author of the article below missed a huge resource using brokers (apartment Locators) to narrow down your search.  There are free locator services in virtually every major city in the U.S.

Start with www.apartmentsacrossamerica.com. If your city isn’t listed, contact a locator in your state.  They will direct you to local services in or near your township of choice.  The key here is to work smart.  Locators are a great information source to begin, and often quickly resolve, the tedious task of finding that perfect apartment.

Thanks to the real-estate slump it’s a renters’ market out there. Vacancy rates are still pretty high and landlords in many areas are willing to bargain, in some cases offering a free month’s rent or waiving fees. Home prices have also fallen back to earth since the boom years.

Renton apartment manager charged with housing discrimination | KING5.com | Seattle Area Local News

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

Hard to believe discrimination continues in this day and age, but it does.  Tolerance is a much-needed value in today’s world – not just in housing, but in life.  Remember the old adage, “You can’t judge a book by its cover.”  So don’t.

RENTON, Wash. – A Renton apartment manager, along with the apartment building’s owners and property management company, has been charged with violating the fair housing act.

5 Must-Knows Before Hanging a For Rent Sign | American Apartment Owners Association

Friday, April 9th, 2010

This handy guide for ‘accidental’ landlords serves as a get-back-to-basics reminder for any landlord who wants to make a profit.  They’re called “accidental landlords” or “reluctant landlords” — and during this housing downturn, more of them seem to pop up every day. They’re the homeowners who have tried — and failed — to sell their houses, so they’ve decided to find tenants who to move in and pay rent.

US apartment market may have turned corner-report | Reuters

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

Wow, I just read an article (and posted the link on our blog) that seemed to say the exact opposite.  I am, however, an optimist at heart — I’m going with this one!

NEW YORK, April 6 Reuters – U.S. apartment vacancy rates stopped rising and rents increased modestly in the first quarter, signs the market is poised to recover, according to real estate research firm Reis.
